Social media was set abuzz on Sunday night with false reports of the demise of legendary tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain. Condolence messages poured in from fans, celebrities, and politicians worldwide. However, these rumors were quickly debunked by Hussain’s nephew, Ameer Aulia, who clarified that the 73-year-old musician is alive but in critical condition.

Taking to his unverified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Aulia wrote, “My uncle Zakir Hussain is very much alive. We ask the news media to stop posting false information. He is in a serious condition, and we urge his fans around the world to pray for his recovery.”

Hussain, who is currently admitted to the ICU of a San Francisco hospital due to heart-related issues, has been battling health complications for the past few days. His manager, Nirmala Bachani, confirmed that the celebrated tabla player has been facing blood pressure problems. “We ask for everyone’s well-wishes and prayers during this challenging time,” she said.

Misinformation Sparks Tributes on Social Media

Despite the family’s clarifications, rumors of Hussain’s death led to an outpouring of tributes on social media. Several high-profile figures, including Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, posted messages honoring the tabla legend. Even the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting tweeted, “The world has lost a true musical genius. Zakir Hussain’s contributions to music will forever be cherished,” only to delete the tweet later.

Journalist Parvaiz Alam also stepped in to quash the rumors, confirming that he had spoken to Hussain’s brother-in-law in London on December 15. He stated, “The family has not confirmed the news of his death.”

Zakir Hussain: A Legend Beyond Borders

Zakir Hussain is more than just a musician—he is a global icon. The son of legendary tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha, Hussain is widely regarded as one of the greatest percussionists of all time. His groundbreaking collaboration in 1973 with John McLaughlin, L Shankar, and Vikku Vinayakram created a fusion of Indian classical music and jazz that redefined global music.

Hussain is also a five-time Grammy winner, with his most recent accolades coming earlier this year at the 66th Grammy Awards, where he bagged three awards.

Call for Prayers

As the maestro battles for his life, his family and manager have requested fans worldwide to send their prayers for his recovery. Ameer Aulia’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of verifying news before spreading it, especially during such sensitive times.

While social media continues to speculate, one thing is clear—Zakir Hussain’s unparalleled contributions to the world of music have left an indelible mark that will resonate for generations to come. Let us all come together to pray for his speedy recovery.
