Social media users worldwide were thrown into frustration as several popular platforms owned by Meta, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and others, experienced widespread outages, with reports flooding in from India and beyond. Users found themselves abruptly logged out of their accounts and encountered difficulties while attempting to use the platforms. Furthermore, many faced issues with Meta-owned instant messaging application WhatsApp as well.

The outage spike was evident on the DownDetector.com website, and social media users quickly turned to alternative platforms, such as Elon Musk-owned micro-blogging platform X, to express their frustration and seek connection. "Facebook is down, so I guess I'll come hang out with my Twitter peeps. How are we doing on this Tuesday, friends!?" wrote one user on X.

Users across all Meta-owned apps struggled with resetting passwords and utilizing two-factor authentication for logging back in.

This marks the most significant outage of 2024 thus far, impacting major social media platforms worldwide, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, hashtags such as #FacebookDown and #InstagramDown trended as users voiced their concerns and experiences. According to Downdetector, an outage reporting platform, the peak of the disruption occurred at 8:59 PM, with over 15,000 reports. Approximately 77% of application users reported issues, while 21% encountered problems with the website.

At 9:05 PM, Instagram faced a similar fate, with over 32,000 users reporting disruptions. Of those affected, 72% experienced issues with the application, while 20% struggled with logging in.

As of now, Meta has not released an official statement regarding the global outage. In the meantime, X has become a hub for memes, discussions, and reflections on the situation, with many users expressing concerns about Facebook's service downtime.
