Virat Kohli Ruled Out of First ODI Against England Due to Injury

06 Feb 2025 10:49 AM

The much-anticipated ODI series between India and England has kicked off, but Indian cricket fans were left disappointed as star batter Virat Kohli was ruled out of the first match in Nagpur due to a knee injury. The injury occurred during a training session on Wednesday evening, just a day before the game.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Makes His ODI Debut

With Kohli unavailable, India made a crucial change to their playing XI. Young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal was handed his ODI debut, alongside bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana. Jaiswal was slotted to open the innings with captain Rohit Sharma, while vice-captain Shubman Gill was listed at No. 4. However, the final batting order remains to be seen.

India Bowling First in Nagpur

At the toss, Rohit Sharma confirmed Kohli’s injury and mentioned that the right-handed batter would miss the match due to knee discomfort. England won the toss and opted to bat first, putting India's bowlers to the test early on.

India’s Last ODI Series Before Champions Trophy

This three-match ODI series against England holds great significance as it is India’s final preparation before the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19. Notably, India has not played an ODI match since August last year, when they lost a three-match series 2-0 against Sri Lanka, with one game ending in a tie.

Kohli’s Form Under Scrutiny

Virat Kohli’s form has been a major talking point in recent months. His struggles were evident during the tour of Australia, where he was repeatedly dismissed while edging deliveries to the wicketkeeper or slip cordon. Determined to regain his touch, Kohli spent time working with former India and RCB batting coach Sanjay Bangar. He also made a rare appearance in the Ranji Trophy for Delhi, his first since 2012, but managed to score only 6 runs against Railways.

What’s Next for Kohli and Team India?

Kohli’s absence in the first ODI raises concerns about his fitness for the rest of the series. Team India will be hoping for his quick recovery, as his experience and presence are crucial ahead of the Champions Trophy. Meanwhile, the youngsters in the squad have a golden opportunity to showcase their talent on the international stage.
