The diplomatic rift between India and Canada deepened as the U.S. urged India to cooperate with Canada’s investigation into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and Khalistani separatist leader. At a Washington press briefing, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the seriousness of Canada's allegations, stressing the importance of bilateral cooperation. However, Miller noted that India had chosen not to pursue this path.

India's Rejection and US Balance on Relations

While Canada alleges Indian government involvement in Nijjar’s assassination in June 2023, India has dismissed these accusations as "absurd" and politically motivated, especially in light of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s declining popularity ahead of the 2025 election. India has repeatedly asked Canada to present credible evidence to support its claims. The U.S., meanwhile, continues to tread cautiously, balancing the crisis with its strategic partnership with India. Miller reiterated that India remains a key partner for the U.S., particularly in their shared Indo-Pacific agenda.

Diplomatic Fallout: Expulsions and Countermeasures

The diplomatic standoff escalated in September 2023, following Trudeau’s public accusation that Indian agents were linked to Nijjar’s death. This triggered the expulsion of diplomats from both nations and deteriorated bilateral ties. Tensions flared again this week when Canada’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police claimed that Indian agents had collaborated with criminal gangs, such as the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, to target pro-Khalistani activists on Canadian soil. In response, India expelled several Canadian diplomats, including acting High Commissioner Stewart Wheeler, and recalled its officials citing security concerns.

Background on Hardeep Singh Nijjar

Nijjar, associated with the banned Khalistan Tiger Force, was wanted in India for terrorism-related activities, including the murder of a Hindu priest in Punjab. India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) had placed a bounty of ₹10 lakh on Nijjar for information leading to his arrest. His death has fueled existing tensions between the Indian government and diaspora-based Khalistani activists.

What’s Next for India-Canada Relations?

The crisis highlights the growing friction in global geopolitics, where domestic issues intersect with international diplomacy. Both India and Canada are facing pressure to de-escalate, especially as other geopolitical players like the U.S. call for cooperation. With more expulsions and accusations exchanged, the road to reconciliation seems uncertain. The situation also complicates India’s diplomatic relations ahead of key international events, including the 2025 G20 summit, while Canada contends with criticism over its handling of separatist activities.

This unfolding situation underscores the challenges of balancing national security concerns, international law, and political alliances. Both nations will need to carefully navigate these complexities to avoid further deterioration in bilateral ties.
