Title: Rohit Sharma's ODI Future in Doubt as BCCI Eyes New Captain Ahead of 2027 World Cup
Indian cricket is entering a transition phase. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepping away from Tests and T20Is, all eyes are now on their future in the ODI format. As the 2027 World Cup inches closer, both senior players are nearing the twilight of their careers — and the question looms: will they make it that far?
While Kohli appears fit and focused, Rohit's place in the ODI setup is under scrutiny. At 40 by the time of the next World Cup, and with leadership changes already underway, BCCI is reportedly preparing for a shift. Despite his recent success — leading India to the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025 — sources indicate that Rohit may not captain in South Africa in 2027.
The BCCI is reportedly considering a split captaincy model. Suryakumar Yadav has led ODIs recently, and Shubman Gill is expected to begin his stint as captain soon. As things stand, selectors are keen to groom a long-term leader, just as they did when Kohli succeeded Dhoni.
Interestingly, Rohit dismissed retirement rumours after the Champions Trophy win, stating clearly:
“One more thing. I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure there are no rumours spread moving forward.”
However, BCCI insiders believed Rohit might have stepped down after the Champions Trophy — which didn’t happen. This leaves the selectors in a sensitive position: respecting a legend’s decision while preparing for the future.
