In a historic move toward development and security, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has completed the setup of five forward bases in the dense and Naxal-hit forests of Abujhmad, located in the Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh. This region, long considered inaccessible and dangerous, is now on the path to change, with the construction of a 40-km stretch of National Highway 130D finally gaining momentum.

What Is Abujhmad and Why Is It Important?

Abujhmad, meaning “unknown land,” is a remote area spread across 4,000 sq. km in Chhattisgarh, bordering Maharashtra. For decades, it has been under the control of Maoist insurgents and considered one of the most difficult regions for law enforcement and development agencies to enter.

The dense forest served as a key hideout for Communist Party of India (Maoist) cadres, particularly leaders from West Bastar, North Bastar, and Maad Divisions.

The ITBP Mission: 5 Bases, One Goal

In a significant achievement, ITBP has successfully set up five Company Operating Bases (COBs) in record time:

  • Mohandi

  • Kodliyar

  • Kutul

  • Bedmakoti

  • Padamkot

  • Nelangur (the final and most crucial one)

These forward bases are located near the Maharashtra border, enhancing access from Chhattisgarh to districts like Gadchiroli.

According to officials, this is the fastest deployment of COBs in a core Maoist area in Chhattisgarh. With these setups, the path is now clear for road construction teams, contractors, and workers to safely enter and begin building infrastructure.

Highway Construction Begins

Thanks to the ITBP’s presence, construction on the long-awaited NH-130D, part of the Bharatmala project, can now begin. This national highway will not only connect remote tribal areas to major towns and cities but also boost economic development, healthcare access, and educational opportunities.

The ITBP will provide security to all teams involved in the highway construction, ensuring work continues without disruption from insurgent threats.

BSF Also Expands in the Region

The Border Security Force (BSF) is also working in tandem, opening more COBs in the northern parts of Narayanpur, targeting better connectivity to Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district.

A Step Toward Development and Peace

This move marks a turning point in the fight against Left-Wing Extremism in India. By securing and opening up areas like Abujhmad, the government aims to not only reduce Naxal influence but also bring long-overdue development to the region.

The ITBP has been actively working in anti-Naxal operations since 2009, with more focused deployment in Rajnandgaon, Narayanpur, and Kondagaon districts since 2015.

Conclusion

Setting up five ITBP bases in the heart of Maoist territory is a bold and strategic step toward peace, security, and development. With the groundwork now in place, the people of Abujhmad may finally see a future where roads, schools, and hospitals replace fear and isolation.
