"There's One India": Canada Reaffirms Support For Territorial Integrity
Canada has affirmed its stance on India's territorial integrity amid strained relations between the two nations following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's controversial claims last year. Canada's Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, David Morrison, made the statement during testimony before the Foreign Interference Commission in Ottawa, stating, "Canada's policy is very clear that India's territorial integrity must be respected. There's one India, and that's been made very clear."
This declaration follows Trudeau's allegations of Indian government involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and one of India's most-wanted terrorists. India had dismissed these claims as "absurd" and "motivated."
Morrison also touched upon the activities of pro-Khalistan groups in Canada, describing them as "awful but lawful," given the country's protections for freedom of speech. The statement about India's territorial integrity is seen as an attempt to ease tensions and clarify Canada's position regarding the Khalistan issue.
Relations between Canada and India had deteriorated sharply after Trudeau's accusations, with trade talks stalling and diplomatic relations souring. However, this latest move could signal Canada's willingness to restore bilateral ties.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the leader of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force, was shot dead in June 2023. Canada arrested four Indian nationals as part of its investigation, while India has accused the country of providing political space to separatist elements.
