On October 12, 2024, a tragic rail accident took place in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district when the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express rear-ended a stationary goods train. The accident occurred due to a “mismatch between signal and route,” according to RN Singh, General Manager of Southern Railways.

How Did the Accident Happen?

The express train, carrying over 1,300 passengers, was traveling at 75 km/h when it was supposed to switch to the main line. However, it was mistakenly diverted onto a closed loop where the goods train was parked. Despite the signal being set for the main track, the passenger train unexpectedly entered the wrong section, colliding with the goods train from behind.

Impact of the Accident

  • 12 coaches of the express train derailed.

  • A power car caught fire, but no fatalities have been reported.

  • 19 passengers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at government hospitals.

Eyewitnesses and officials reported a sudden "heavy jerk" before the train switched tracks, leading to the derailment. The remaining passengers were transported to Chennai by bus and placed on a special train to continue their journeys.

Drone visuals from the accident site revealed extensive damage, with repair work already underway. Officials estimate that restoring full operations may take up to 24 hours.

Response and Cancellations

  • 18 trains scheduled for October 12 have been canceled or diverted.

  • A high-level inquiry has been ordered to investigate the signal failure.

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock at the incident and urged rescue efforts to be expedited.

This unfortunate event, occurring just 40 km from Chennai, raises serious concerns about the signaling infrastructure. The Railway Safety Commissioner leads the investigation to determine the exact cause and prevent similar mishaps.
