Syrians Reclaim Assad’s Coastal Resort: A Symbol of Freedom After Decades of Oppression

In a historic moment following the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, locals in Latakia ventured into the Assad family's private coastal resort for the first time in decades. This iconic estate, nestled in Burj Islam, symbolized the privilege and power of the Assad regime during their 54-year rule. Built on land that once housed olive groves, the luxurious villa, private beach, and sprawling gardens were inaccessible to ordinary Syrians for over 50 years.

The resort, which now lies in disrepair after looting and damage, paints a stark picture of the end of Assad's legacy. Cyclist Bassel Soufi, who traveled 40 kilometers to see the compound, expressed a newfound sense of freedom and hope. For him and many others, visiting this once-forbidden location represents liberation from years of oppression.

Sayit Bayirli, a fighter from the Free Syrian Army and a member of the local Turkmen community, recounted how the regime displaced families to build this estate. Bayirli emphasized the importance of returning such properties to their rightful owners or repurposing them for public benefit under the new government.

The fall of the Assad regime and the subsequent reclaiming of this estate resonate deeply with Syrians, marking not just the end of authoritarian rule but also a chance to rebuild and reclaim their history.
