Syria faces escalating turmoil as rebel forces claim to have encircled the capital, Damascus, while the government of President Bashar al-Assad refutes reports of troop withdrawals. The rapid advance, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has intensified the long-standing conflict, displacing thousands and drawing international reactions.

Rebel commander Hassan Abdel Ghani declared the offensive in its final phase, urging fighters to prepare for a takeover of Damascus. HTS, historically linked to Al-Qaeda, has attempted to project a less sectarian stance, urging minority groups in newly controlled areas to trust its leadership. Meanwhile, Syrian authorities insist their forces remain steadfast in defending the capital.

The humanitarian toll is staggering, with the United Nations reporting over 3.7 lakh displaced and 826 fatalities within a week, including 111 civilians. The violence has sparked concern globally, with Russia opposing the rebels' territorial gains and emphasizing adherence to UN agreements. In contrast, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated a non-interventionist stance, signaling that Syria's conflict is not America’s concern.

This crisis underscores the fragile state of Syria’s political and social fabric, with regional and global powers debating the best path forward. As the conflict deepens, the prospect of resolution seems more elusive than ever.
