South Korea is grappling with the aftermath of one of the most severe snowstorms in its history, with the snowfall ranking as the third-heaviest in Seoul since records began in 1907. Over 40 cm (16 inches) of snow blanketed parts of the capital, paralyzing transportation and causing widespread disruption. The unusual November snowstorm highlights the impact of changing weather patterns, with warmer sea temperatures meeting cold air currents to create extreme conditions.

The blizzard caused extensive disruptions, with more than 140 flights canceled, ferry routes suspended, and schools shut across the region. Incheon Airport, South Korea’s main international hub, experienced significant delays, while roads turned hazardous. Tragically, at least five people lost their lives, four due to structural collapses under the weight of the snow, and one in a traffic accident. A 53-vehicle pileup in Wonju injured 11, underscoring the dangers of icy roads.

The storm's intensity disrupted daily life, with over 1,200 schools closing in Gyeonggi province alone. North Korea was also affected, receiving significant snowfall between Tuesday and Wednesday. While conditions have started to ease, the storm’s impact has left many reflecting on the growing frequency of extreme weather events and their implications for infrastructure and public safety.

The rare November snowfall serves as a stark reminder of how shifting climatic conditions can disrupt urban and rural life alike, emphasizing the need for better preparedness to tackle such natural events in the future.
