In a significant loss to Indian politics, former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, the visionary leader credited with transforming Bengaluru into India’s IT hub, passed away at the age of 92. He breathed his last at his Bengaluru residence in the early hours of December 10, 2024. Known for his leadership and progressive vision, SM Krishna leaves behind a legacy that has shaped not only Karnataka but also India's global image as a technology powerhouse.

A Visionary Leader Who Redefined Bengaluru

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, SM Krishna's journey from a small village to international recognition is inspiring. His tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 is remembered as a golden era for Bengaluru. Under his leadership, Bengaluru evolved into India’s "Silicon Valley," attracting global IT giants and establishing itself as a tech capital.

By prioritizing infrastructure development and creating a conducive environment for investment, SM Krishna laid the foundation for Bengaluru’s emergence as an international technology hub. Initiatives like the development of the International Tech Park (ITPL) in Whitefield are a testament to his far-sightedness.

A Storied Political Career

SM Krishna's political journey began in 1962 when he won the Maddur assembly seat as an Independent candidate. Over the decades, he held several key positions, including Governor of Maharashtra (2004-2008) and India’s External Affairs Minister (2009-2012).

Initially a member of the Praja Socialist Party, Krishna joined the Congress in 1971 and played a significant role in shaping its policies in Karnataka. Towards the end of his career, he joined the BJP, demonstrating his adaptability and continued interest in contributing to public life.

The news of SM Krishna’s demise has left political leaders and citizens mourning. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah described him as a mentor and credited him for his unparalleled contributions to the state’s growth, particularly in the IT and biotechnology sectors. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, a contemporary and competitor, remembered Krishna as a true leader whose friendship transcended political boundaries.

A Life Beyond Politics

His international exposure enriched his perspective, enabling him to drive policies that bridged local governance with global standards.
