Shihan Hussaini, a renowned actor, karate legend, and archery icon, passed away at the age of 60 on Tuesday morning in Chennai after a long battle with blood cancer. Known for his daring feats and unwavering passion for sports, Mr. Hussaini's death leaves a void in the fields of archery, martial arts, and cinema.

🥋 A Life of Passion and Bold Acts

Shihan Hussaini was not only a skilled karate instructor but also a master of archery, earning him the admiration of many. He founded the Archery Association of Tamil Nadu (TAAT) and served as its general secretary. Under his leadership, archery grew from a niche sport into a prominent discipline, producing numerous champions who represented Tamil Nadu and India at national and international levels.

However, Mr. Hussaini was also known for his sensational and controversial public acts. In 2015, he made headlines when he performed a self-crucifixion stunt, nailing his hands and feet to a wooden cross weighing 300 kg. The act was a plea for the return of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to power.

His admiration for Ms. Jayalalithaa was evident in other eccentric displays as well.

  • In 2005, he painted 56 portraits of her using his own blood to mark her 56th birthday.

  • In 2013, he created a frozen blood bust of the leader using 11 liters of blood, including his own.

  • Ironically, Ms. Jayalalithaa condemned these extreme gestures, advising him to refrain from such acts.

Apart from being a sports icon, Mr. Hussaini made his mark in the film industry. He debuted in 1986 with Kamal Haasan's movie Punnagai Mannan. He went on to act in several Tamil films, including:

Throughout his life, Mr. Hussaini performed jaw-dropping and death-defying stunts, including:

  • Allowing 101 cars to drive over his right hand.

  • Breaking 5,000 tiles and 1,000 bricks in succession.

  • Surviving a venomous cobra bite.

  • Setting himself on fire using 140 liters of petrol.

His resilience and fearless attitude made him a living legend in martial arts and sports.

In his final days, Mr. Hussaini documented his cancer journey on social media, giving regular updates and inspiring his followers with his courage. He had also made the decision to donate his body for further medical research.

His body was kept at his residence, High Command in Besant Nagar, Chennai, where family, students, and admirers paid their respects. The final rites took place at Royapettah Ameerunisa Burial Ground at 4 pm.

In honor of his contributions to sports, the family requested archers to attend the funeral in their uniforms and karate students in their Gi.
