PM Modi’s Special Gift to Trinidad & Tobago: A Spiritual Connection Across Oceans
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his historic visit to Trinidad and Tobago, made a heartfelt gesture that beautifully symbolized India’s deep-rooted cultural ties with the Caribbean nation. As a token of India’s spiritual and ancestral bond, PM Modi gifted holy water from the Mahakumbh and the Sarayu River, along with a replica of the Ram Mandir, to Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
A Daughter of Bihar
In a touching moment during an address to the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago, PM Modi referred to Kamla Persad-Bissessar as a “daughter of Bihar”. Her ancestors once lived in Buxar, Bihar, and she had even visited her ancestral village Bhelupur (in Itarhi block of Buxar district) back in 2012.
“You all know that earlier this year, the world’s largest spiritual gathering, the Mahakumbh, took place,” said PM Modi. “I have the honour to carry water from the Mahakumbh with me. I request Kamala ji to offer the holy waters of the Sarayu River and Mahakumbh to the Ganga Dhara here.”
This symbolic offering represents a spiritual connection between India and the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean, and particularly Trinidad and Tobago.
A Historic Visit After 26 Years
PM Modi's visit marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999. On arrival at Piarco International Airport, he was warmly welcomed with a ceremonial Guard of Honour by Kamla Persad-Bissessar and a large delegation of 38 ministers and four MPs.
The visit signifies a renewed friendship and collaboration between the two nations. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the close cultural ties, noting that 45% of Trinidad and Tobago’s population is of Indian origin. Most of them trace their roots back to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, especially from Bhojpuri-speaking regions like Chhapra, Ara, Ballia, Siwan, Gopalganj, Banaras, and Azamgarh.
Bridging Continents Through Culture and Devotion
This heartfelt gesture—presenting sacred water and a Ram Mandir replica—not only reflects India’s soft power diplomacy but also celebrates the shared heritage between the two countries. It sends a powerful message of unity, faith, and remembrance to the global Indian community.
PM Modi's recognition of Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s Indian roots, and his call to preserve cultural and spiritual identity, is a proud moment for both nations. The gift of Ram Mandir’s replica—a symbol of India’s rich spiritual legacy—will surely be cherished in Trinidad and Tobago for generations.
