Hopfield worries that AI could become a similarly unpredictable force if left unchecked, warning, "I'm worried about anything that says... 'I'm faster than you are, I'm bigger than you are... can you peacefully inhabit with me?' I don't know, I worry."

Geoffrey Hinton: AI Could Outpace Human Control

Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the "Godfather of AI," shares Hopfield’s concerns. During a news conference at the University of Toronto, Hinton expressed doubt over humanity's ability to control AI as it continues to become more intelligent. “If you look around, there are very few examples of more intelligent things being controlled by less intelligent things,” he noted, suggesting that once AI surpasses human intelligence, it may seize control, leading to catastrophic scenarios.

Hinton has consistently called for more research into AI safety, stressing the need for young researchers to prioritize this area. He also advocates for governmental intervention, urging governments to compel large tech companies to allocate computational resources toward AI safety research. Without this concerted effort, Hinton warns that society could face dangerous consequences as AI technology continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace.
