Mohini Mohan Dutta: The Mystery Man Who May Inherit Ratan Tata's Rs 500 Crore

07 Feb 2025 08:53 AM

Ratan Tata, the legendary business tycoon and philanthropist, left behind a legacy that continues to shape India's corporate landscape. However, his will has sparked curiosity and speculation, as reports suggest that nearly a third of his residual assets—worth Rs 500 crore—have been allocated to a relatively unknown figure, Mohini Mohan Dutta.

Who is Mohini Mohan Dutta?

Unlike other prominent names associated with the Tata Group, Mohini Mohan Dutta remains a mystery to many. A Jamshedpur-based entrepreneur, Dutta co-owned Stallion, a company that eventually merged with Tata Services. Prior to this merger, he held an 80% stake in the business, with Tata Industries owning the remaining 20%.

Dutta's association with Ratan Tata reportedly dates back almost six decades. Their first encounter took place in Jamshedpur at the Dealers Hostel when Dutta was just 24 years old. While he has largely remained out of the public eye, insiders claim he maintained a close connection with the Tata family over the years. He was even invited to Ratan Tata’s exclusive birth anniversary celebration at the NCPA in Mumbai in December 2024, attended by only close associates and family members.

Adding to this longstanding connection, Dutta's daughter also worked within the Tata Group—first at Taj Hotels until 2015, and later at Tata Trusts, where she was employed until 2024.

Ratan Tata’s Will: A Glimpse Into His Legacy

Following Ratan Tata’s passing on October 9, 2024, his will was made public nearly two weeks later. It outlined the distribution of his wealth among multiple beneficiaries, including his brother, half-sisters, dedicated household staff, and his trusted executive assistant, Shantanu Naidu.

One of the most heartfelt provisions in the will was ensuring unlimited care for his beloved pet dog, Tito. However, the biggest surprise came with the revelation that Rs 500 crore of his assets were to be inherited by Mohini Mohan Dutta.

What Happens Next?

Despite the allocation in the will, the inheritance process is not immediate. The distribution of assets requires probate certification from the High Court, a legal procedure that could take at least six months. This process ensures that the will is valid and executed as per legal requirements.

While the inclusion of Mohini Mohan Dutta in Ratan Tata’s will has raised eyebrows, it highlights the strong personal bonds Tata maintained throughout his life. His generosity and keen sense of loyalty extended beyond his corporate empire, touching the lives of those who remained close to him in both personal and professional capacities.

As legal proceedings unfold, the world watches with intrigue, waiting to see how this fascinating chapter in Ratan Tata’s legacy plays out.
