Modi Government Prioritizes 35 Million-Strong Indian Diaspora: S. Jaishankar's Remarks at PBD Convention Launch
The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with its vast 35 million-strong diaspora, a cornerstone of its international engagement strategy. In a recent event, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, alongside Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi, launched the official website for the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention, scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar from January 8-10, 2025.
During the launch, Jaishankar emphasized the invaluable role the Indian diaspora plays in addressing global challenges and supporting India’s growth trajectory. The biennial event serves as a vital platform to renew cultural and professional bonds between India and its global community. This year's theme, "Viksit Bharat ki Sankalpna Mein Pravasi Bhartiyon Ka Yogdan" (The Diaspora's Contribution to a Developed India), aims to highlight the diaspora's significant role in shaping India’s future.
Jaishankar also reflected on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ongoing engagement with the diaspora, noting that these interactions underscore the government’s high regard for their contributions. The upcoming PBD convention will also feature cultural exhibitions and technological contributions of the diaspora, celebrating the dual legacy of tradition and progress.
The convention, with a dedicated focus on the role of the Indian community in India’s development, is expected to be a grand celebration, with special activities like the youth edition, exhibitions on India’s cultural heritage, and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards. The event will culminate with President Droupadi Murmu presiding over the closing ceremony. The launch of the PBD website marks the beginning of participant registrations, offering essential information on accommodation, travel, and the program.
As the global community watches India’s journey toward a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas promises to be a key moment in celebrating the bond between India and its overseas citizens.
