Mikheil Kavelashvili: From Football to the Presidency Amid Controversy
Mikheil Kavelashvili, a former Manchester City footballer, is set to become the President of Georgia, marking a significant transition from sports to politics. At 53, his presidency, decided by an electoral college rather than popular vote, is stirring debate. Critics question its legitimacy, citing widespread protests in Tbilisi and beyond. These demonstrations reflect public dissatisfaction with the ruling Georgian Dream party’s decision to delay EU membership talks until 2028 and align more closely with Russia.
Kavelashvili’s journey is notable. After a modest football career, which included stints in Manchester City and several Swiss clubs, he entered Georgian politics in 2016, becoming a member of parliament with the Georgian Dream party. In 2022, he co-founded the far-right People's Power party, and his nomination as president by Georgian Dream in November 2024 drew widespread criticism.
His appointment comes amidst 16 days of protests driven by frustration over the government’s pro-Russian policies and Kavelashvili’s controversial stances, including his views on LGBTQ rights. Protesters see him as a puppet of oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgian Dream’s founder. Demonstrations have led to over 400 arrests and numerous injuries.
As Kavelashvili steps into a largely ceremonial role, his presidency represents a pivotal moment for Georgia, caught between its pro-EU aspirations and domestic political turbulence.
