The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) faced a significant setback on November 26, 2024, when a major fire erupted during a test of the Epsilon S rocket at the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima, Japan. Although the incident was dramatic, with towering flames and fumes visible from a distance, there were no reported injuries.

What Happened?

During a combustion test at around 8:30 am local time, an explosion occurred approximately 30 seconds after ignition, followed by flames and debris flying toward the sea. The rocket engine, placed horizontally for the test, ignited before the fire broke out, according to media reports.

JAXA stated:

“There was an abnormality during today’s combustion test. We are trying to assess what happened. No injuries have been reported at this point.”

JAXA’s Recent Challenges

The fire adds to a series of difficulties for JAXA in recent years:

  1. July 2023 Explosion: An Epsilon S engine exploded during testing.

  2. H3 Rocket Delays: While successfully launched in February 2024, JAXA’s flagship H3 rocket faced multiple earlier setbacks.

  3. Private Sector Issues: Earlier this year, Space One’s Kairos rocket exploded moments after liftoff, highlighting broader challenges in Japan’s space exploration efforts.

Achievements Amidst Setbacks

Despite these issues, JAXA has celebrated milestones, including a successful lunar landing earlier this year, making Japan the fifth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon.

Looking Ahead

JAXA will now investigate the cause of the fire and work to ensure such incidents are avoided in future tests. As Japan continues to expand its presence in space exploration, both its successes and challenges underscore the complexities of rocket science.
