Maha Kumbh Stampede: Tragedy Strikes During Mauni Amavasya Snan

29 Jan 2025 04:22 AM

The Maha Kumbh, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, witnessed a tragic incident on January 29, 2025, as a stampede broke out at the Sangam in Prayagraj during the sacred Mauni Amavasya Snan. Reports suggest multiple casualties and several injuries after a barrier collapsed amid the massive crowd.

What Happened?

As per official reports, the stampede-like situation occurred early in the morning when lakhs of devotees thronged the riverbanks for the Amrit Snan. The overwhelming rush led to the collapse of a barrier at the Sangam, causing chaos and panic among the pilgrims. Authorities are yet to release the exact count of injured individuals, but at least 15 deaths have been confirmed so far.

Government’s Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are closely monitoring the situation and have been in continuous discussions with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The CM has urged devotees to avoid overcrowding and instead perform their rituals at alternative ghats.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), CM Yogi Adityanath appealed to pilgrims:

Dear devotees, please take bath at the ghat closest to you. Avoid heading towards the Sangam Nose. Follow the instructions of the administration and help maintain order.

Akharas’ Decision Amid the Crisis

Initially, the Akharas decided to call off the Mauni Amavasya Amrit Snan due to safety concerns. However, later in the day, after discussions with the Mela administration, the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad announced that the seers and saints would resume their holy dip, ensuring that proper crowd management measures were in place.

Impact of the Incident

The Maha Kumbh is a once-in-12-years event that draws millions of devotees from across the world. The unfortunate incident has cast a shadow over the ongoing festivities. The administration has ramped up rescue operations, with medical teams working round the clock to provide aid to the injured.

Devotees’ Safety – A Priority

With an expected footfall of over 10 crore pilgrims, managing such an enormous crowd remains a significant challenge. Authorities are reinforcing security, increasing barricades, and implementing better crowd control measures to prevent further mishaps.

This tragic event is a stark reminder of the risks associated with massive gatherings and the need for stringent safety protocols. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and those affected by this unfortunate incident.
