A London chauffeur, Jihad Abousalah, was convicted of stalking Qatari princess Haya Al-Thani after mistakenly believing they were in a romantic relationship. Westminster Magistrates' Court sentenced the 47-year-old to a 12-month community order and a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement. The situation escalated as Abousalah sent gifts, including flowers and a bracelet, to the princess, along with numerous calls while she was in Doha. His actions caused severe distress to Al-Thani, disrupting her daily life and prompting her to seek private security for protection.

The court heard how Abousalah, previously employed as the princess’s chauffeur, visited her London residence and attempted to deliver flowers through staff. Prosecutor David Burns described how the princess’s life was deeply impacted, as she constantly checked her surroundings for safety. Al-Thani also expressed concerns about her children’s schedules being known to Abousalah, further amplifying her distress.

Abousalah’s defense stated that his actions were influenced by mental illness, which led him to hold a delusional belief in a relationship with the princess. He even divorced his wife due to this belief. Judge Louisa Cieciora acknowledged the role of Abousalah’s mental health issues in the case but emphasized the harm caused to Al-Thani and her family. Recognizing his remorse, the court-mandated rehabilitation activities and issued a three-year restraining order prohibiting contact with the princess, her husband, and entry into Hyde Park.

This incident underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues in criminal cases while ensuring the safety and well-being of victims.
