Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, is reportedly in serious health decline, leading to speculation that his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, may have already been selected as his successor. According to recent reports, a secret meeting was held among members of Iran's Assembly of Experts to decide on Khamenei's successor and Mojtaba, Khamenei's second son, is believed to have been chosen for the role.

The meeting took place on September 26, 2024, and was convened under Khamenei's orders. Despite initial opposition, the Assembly, which consists of 60 members, unanimously agreed to designate Mojtaba as the successor. This decision was reportedly influenced by strong pressure, including alleged threats made to those present at the meeting.

Mojtaba's potential succession comes at a tumultuous time for Iran, with the country facing internal struggles and external tensions, particularly with Israel. His ascent to the leadership position is expected to present challenges, as there is no unified political figure like Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who played a pivotal role in Khamenei’s own rise to power after Ayatollah Khomeini’s death in 1989.

The situation surrounding Khamenei's health and the leadership transition has been further complicated by the death of key political figures, such as Ebrahim Raisi, who had been considered a possible successor, and the assassination of Qasem Soleimani.

Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969, has long been involved in Iran's political landscape, supporting figures such as former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He is also known for his role in suppressing protests following Ahmadinejad’s controversial re-election in 2009.

As Iran faces an uncertain political future, the leadership succession could have significant ramifications for both the nation and the broader Middle East region
