In a significant statement during the Question Hour in Lok Sabha on Friday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed concern over the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh. Highlighting the need for safety and protection of minorities, he emphasized that it is in Bangladesh's own interest to ensure their well-being amidst increasing reports of communal violence.

Concerns Over Targeted Violence

Jaishankar's remarks follow alarming reports of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. In a recent incident, a Bangladeshi student illegally swam across a river into India, while a 17-year-old Hindu girl fled to India after being targeted for her devotion to ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness).

These incidents come against the backdrop of 88 reported cases of communal violence against minorities, primarily Hindus, since the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has acknowledged the violence and confirmed the arrest of 70 individuals in connection with these attacks.

India’s Diplomatic Stand

India has taken a firm stance on the matter. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently met with Bangladeshi leaders to discuss these incidents, conveying India's concerns over the safety and welfare of minorities in the neighboring country. Jaishankar reiterated that the protection of minorities is essential for fostering stronger bilateral relations.

Neighborhood Relations Beyond Bangladesh

During his address, Jaishankar also touched upon India's relations with other neighbors, including Pakistan. He stated that for relations with Pakistan to improve, the country must prove that it is free from terrorism. Highlighting India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, he pointed out the strong development projects, trade volume, and exchanges India maintains with neighboring countries, excluding Pakistan and China.

The Bigger Picture

As communal tensions rise in Bangladesh, the safety of minorities remains a pressing issue, not just for Bangladesh but also for regional stability. Jaishankar's firm statements underline India's commitment to ensuring that minority rights are respected and protected across the region.
