IMD Update: Delhi-NCR and Northern States Brace for Intense Heatwave, Light Rain Expected Later This Week
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Delhi-NCR and several northwestern states, predicting intense heatwave conditions until June 11, 2025. However, some relief may be on the horizon as light rains and thunderstorms are expected by the weekend.
Heatwave Conditions Across North India
The IMD’s latest forecast warns that Delhi-NCR along with states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Madhya Pradesh will experience heatwave conditions for the next few days. While Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are expected to avoid the heatwave, most other northwestern regions will face soaring temperatures.
Rajasthan, in particular, is expected to witness severe heatwave conditions on Monday, June 9. The heatwave is expected to continue till Wednesday, June 11, with above-normal temperatures recorded in Delhi-NCR as well — ranging between 41°C to 43°C during the day, and 27°C to 29°C at night.
Delhi-NCR Weather Outlook
For the capital, the weather is expected to remain hot and humid with clear skies. Surface winds carrying dust particles are predicted to blow at speeds of 20 to 30 kmph, primarily coming from the northwest. The IMD notes that these winds will gradually increase throughout the day, intensifying the discomfort.
Rain to Bring Respite
The good news is that the heatwave will likely end by Friday-Saturday, June 13-14, when light to moderate rainfall is expected across the affected regions. Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh may experience isolated rain showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Uttarakhand, known for its hilly terrain, is forecasted to receive isolated heavy rainfall from June 12 to June 14, providing significant relief from the recent heat.
What This Means for Residents
With temperatures soaring well above normal, residents in these regions are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and using protective clothing are key to staying safe.
Stay Updated
The IMD continues to monitor the weather closely and will provide updates if there are any significant changes. Those in heatwave-affected states should keep an eye on weather reports for timely information on rainfall and temperature shifts.
