Elon Musk Plans to Transform SpaceX’s Starbase into a Texas City
Elon Musk has officially launched his plan to turn SpaceX's Starship launch site, known as Starbase in South Texas, into an incorporated city. Situated at Boca Chica, near the Rio Grande Valley, Starbase aims to become a hub of rocket innovation while serving as a self-sufficient community. This announcement aligns with Musk’s strategic move of SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) headquarters from California to Texas.
In a letter addressed to Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr., SpaceX’s general manager Kathryn Lueders outlined the request for incorporation. The goal is to enable rapid workforce expansion, streamline processes, and build amenities for current and future employees. SpaceX currently manages civil functions around Starbase, including utilities, roads, schooling, and healthcare. Incorporating Starbase will transfer these responsibilities to a public body, ensuring the development of world-class living conditions.
Governor Greg Abbott and public figures like Joe Rogan expressed enthusiasm, with Rogan calling it the “dopest city name.” However, SpaceX’s expansion has faced opposition from local groups, including Save RGV, citing environmental concerns.
This ambitious project marks another milestone in Musk’s vision of blending innovation, community, and exploration, cementing Texas as a critical base for SpaceX’s groundbreaking endeavors.
