In the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay is making headlines as he enters the arena with his party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). His debut has not gone unnoticed by the established parties, with both the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) quick to dismiss his ideology and strategy. Their critiques highlight the competitive and often contentious nature of Tamil Nadu's political scene.

DMK’s Response: Accusations of Imitation

The DMK, led by senior figure TKS Elangovan, has accused Vijay of merely copying their policies and ideas. According to Elangovan, Vijay’s proclamations align closely with the DMK's long-established positions, suggesting that the new party lacks originality. He remarked, "These are all our policies, he is copying... whatever he says is what we had already said and which we are following." This assertion points to the DMK's strong belief in their political legacy, which spans over 75 years.

During his first public address, Vijay did not shy away from criticizing the DMK's leadership, claiming they were "cheating people... in the name of the Dravidian model." This pointed criticism targeted the family of Chief Minister MK Stalin, whom Vijay accused of exploiting their power for personal gain.

AIADMK's Take: A "Cocktail Ideology"

On the other side, the AIADMK has welcomed Vijay’s entry into politics but has labeled his party’s ideology as a “cocktail” of various political standpoints. AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan congratulated Vijay yet underscored the challenges ahead, emphasizing that TVK's ideas appear to be a blend of existing political philosophies rather than a distinct ideology. He noted, "It is a mix of ideology of all parties and old wine in a new bottle," indicating a skepticism about TVK’s potential impact.

Vijay’s Stance on Ideology

Despite the criticisms from both parties, Vijay has articulated a vision for his party that includes adopting principles associated with Dravidian leader Periyar, particularly on social justice and women’s empowerment. However, he clarified that his party would not embrace Periyar’s stance on atheism, stating, “We are against nobody's faith.” This distinction seeks to position TVK as a party that respects religious sentiments while advocating for social reforms.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead for Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam

Vijay’s entry into the political arena signifies a new chapter in Tamil Nadu politics, but the path is fraught with challenges. With the DMK and AIADMK both critiquing his approach, Vijay’s ability to carve out a unique identity for TVK will be crucial. As the 2026 elections approach, how effectively he can mobilize support and translate his celebrity status into political capital remains to be seen. The responses from the established parties reveal not only the competitive nature of Tamil Nadu politics but also the expectations placed on new entrants.

As this political narrative unfolds, all eyes will be on Vijay to see if he can rise above the criticisms and deliver on the promises made to his supporters.
