Arvind Kejriwal’s Possible Rajya Sabha Entry Sparks Political Debate

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has stirred political discussions by naming its Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjeev Arora, as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Ludhiana West assembly bypoll. This move has led to intense speculation about AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal's potential entry into the Rajya Sabha.

AAP’s Move Raises Questions

Sanjeev Arora, a prominent industrialist from Ludhiana, has been a Rajya Sabha member since 2022. His candidacy for the bypoll follows the unfortunate demise of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, which left the Ludhiana West seat vacant. While the election date is yet to be announced, the political implications of this decision are already being debated.

BJP’s Reaction: Is Kejriwal Eyeing Rajya Sabha?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been quick to react. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya questioned whether Arora’s nomination was strategically aimed at clearing the way for Kejriwal to enter the Rajya Sabha from Punjab.

“Wouldn’t it be better if someone from Punjab represented the state instead of Kejriwal?” Malviya wrote on X, hinting at the party’s discontent with the move. BJP spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill further fueled the speculation by asking if Kejriwal’s possible Rajya Sabha entry was motivated by his need for government accommodation in Delhi or fear of losing political relevance after his defeat in the recent Delhi elections.

AAP Denies Speculation

Despite the rumors, AAP has firmly denied that Kejriwal is planning a move to the Rajya Sabha. Party spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar dismissed the reports, stating that Kejriwal remains the national convenor of AAP and has no plans to be limited to one seat.

“Earlier, people speculated that he would become Punjab’s Chief Minister. Now, they claim he is heading to Rajya Sabha. Both are incorrect,” Kakkar clarified.

Political Implications

AAP’s strategy comes amid its ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in Punjab, especially after its poor performance in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, where Kejriwal lost to BJP’s Parvesh Verma. With Punjab set for assembly elections in 2027, AAP appears to be shifting its focus to consolidate power in the state.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa also weighed in, claiming that Kejriwal’s entry into Parliament is inevitable. He suggested that AAP initially considered nominating Kejriwal for the Ludhiana West bypoll but changed plans due to possible backlash.

What Lies Ahead?

With the bypoll date yet to be announced, the political landscape remains uncertain. If Sanjeev Arora wins and later vacates his Rajya Sabha seat, will Kejriwal step in? Or is this mere political speculation?

As political debates continue, one thing is clear: the battle for Punjab is heating up, and every move will be closely watched.
