Ajit Doval and Wang Yi Discuss India-China Border Peace
India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi convened in Beijing for the 23rd round of Special Representatives’ (SR) talks on the border mechanism. These discussions aimed to resolve the lingering border disputes and restore bilateral relations, which have been strained since the 2020 military standoff in eastern Ladakh. This is the first SR meeting since 2019 and comes after the October 21 agreement on disengagement at the Demchok and Depsang friction points.
Doval arrived in Beijing to represent India, emphasizing the need for peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and rebuilding trust between the two nations. During the talks, both sides revisited the commitments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during their BRICS summit meeting in October. The SR mechanism, established in 2003, aims to provide a structured approach to resolving the complex 3,488-kilometer border dispute. The talks in Beijing also focused on rebuilding bilateral ties, which were severely impacted following the deadly Galwan Valley clash in June 2020.
